Hubby underwent a sinus surgery on 11 January 2013. After his last follow-up with Dr Yeo (refer my previous post here), he wasn’t showing any improvement after taking the meds. So surgery was the next course of action.
Gee went through 3 types of surgeries. All done in 1 hour back-to-back and they were considered minor procedures. Minor tak minor jugak la. He had to go under full GA and admitted for 2 nights. Debaran si isteri tetap ada. I was praying non-stop for no complications.
The first procedure was called Septoplasty. This is done to reshape the cartilage in the middle of the nose which divides the nostrils. Then it’s Turbinectomy. The doctor will trim the fleshy parts of the inner nose. The part where the doctor trimmed are the inflamed and affected area. Lastly, it’s FESS or Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. This was done to open up the airways inside. Kasi besar sikit bukaan from the nostrils into the sinuses area. In Gee’s case, it’s his cheeks sinus or the maxillary sinuses.
All 3 procedures sounded so technical and scary to us. But according to the doctor, these are the most common procedures done these days to treat chronic sinusitis patients. Dr Yeo performs them almost every day. Wow! Setiap hari.
His surgery was scheduled at 9am. Ended at about 11-ish when the doctor came out from the OT informing me everything went well. Alhamdulillah, syukur.
When they sent him back to the room, he was awake and alert. He said tak rasa sakit but he could feel macam ada cecair kat tekak. Actually that’s blood. Banyak kahak and darah keluar when he cleared his throat. When asked how do you feel? He said dia rasa kepala and hidung dia ringan. Clear and breezy. For the first few days he had to tidur separuh duduk. Kalau flat sangat dia susah nak breathe. Rasa macam orang flu hidung tersumbat. Also sebab darah still mengalir so kena position body untuk kepala tu dongak sikit. Post op care was easy. He was taught how to rinse the sinuses. Masuk air ikut lubang hidung kanan and the water will come out from the other nostril! Saya sangat kagum. I learnt how to do it too. To date masih belum berjaya. Haha! The nostril irrigations will keep the inner wound moist and clean. Baru tak sakit.
The next day he was allowed to go home. Dressing pun dah buka and he just need to come back for follow ups the week after. There will be 4 follow ups each week and so far we are at appointment no 2. During the follow ups, the doc will clean the internal wound. Dia masukkan that tiny camera and with a suction thingy keluarkan all the crust and the darah kering. I could see from the TV and I cringed!! Ya Allah seriau nye. Luckily he was on local anesthesia sprayed dalam lubang hidung tu. Kalau tak sure meraung big baby tuu! Everytime after the “cleaning up” session he will feel better. Rasa hidung clear katanya.
What’s the progress so far? At week 1, he was still snorting. Banyak phlegm and blood lagi. Week 2 is much better. I believe slowly and surely he is recovering. Dengan izin Tuhan of course. I’m glad I insisted on this. So glad.
