Sinus Surgery

Hubby underwent a sinus surgery on 11 January 2013. After his last follow-up with Dr Yeo (refer my previous post here), he wasn’t showing any improvement after taking the meds. So surgery was the next course of action.

Gee went through 3 types of surgeries. All done in 1 hour back-to-back and they were considered minor procedures. Minor tak minor jugak la. He had to go under full GA and admitted for 2 nights. Debaran si isteri tetap ada. I was praying non-stop for no complications.

The first procedure was called Septoplasty. This is done to reshape the cartilage in the middle of the nose which divides the nostrils. Then it’s Turbinectomy. The doctor will trim the fleshy parts of the inner nose. The part where the doctor trimmed are the inflamed and affected area. Lastly, it’s FESS or Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. This was done to open up the airways inside. Kasi besar sikit bukaan from the nostrils into the sinuses area. In Gee’s case, it’s his cheeks sinus or the maxillary sinuses.

All 3 procedures sounded so technical and scary to us. But according to the doctor, these are the most common procedures done these days to treat chronic sinusitis patients. Dr Yeo performs them almost every day. Wow! Setiap hari.

His surgery was scheduled at 9am. Ended at about 11-ish when the doctor came out from the OT informing me everything went well. Alhamdulillah, syukur.

When they sent him back to the room, he was awake and alert. He said tak rasa sakit but he could feel macam ada cecair kat tekak. Actually that’s blood. Banyak kahak and darah keluar when he cleared his throat. When asked how do you feel? He said dia rasa kepala and hidung dia ringan. Clear and breezy. For the first few days he had to tidur separuh duduk. Kalau flat sangat dia susah nak breathe. Rasa macam orang flu hidung tersumbat. Also sebab darah still mengalir so kena position body untuk kepala tu dongak sikit. Post op care was easy. He was taught how to rinse the sinuses. Masuk air ikut lubang hidung kanan and the water will come out from the other nostril! Saya sangat kagum. I learnt how to do it too. To date masih belum berjaya. Haha! The nostril irrigations will keep the inner wound moist and clean. Baru tak sakit.

Post op. One hour after. Still bleeding. His lips and nose were a bit swollen

The next day he was allowed to go home. Dressing pun dah buka and he just need to come back for follow ups the week after. There will be 4 follow ups each week and so far we are at appointment no 2. During the follow ups, the doc will clean the internal wound. Dia masukkan that tiny camera and with a suction thingy keluarkan all the crust and the darah kering. I could see from the TV and I cringed!! Ya Allah seriau nye. Luckily he was on local anesthesia sprayed dalam lubang hidung tu. Kalau tak sure meraung big baby tuu! Everytime after the “cleaning up” session he will feel better. Rasa hidung clear katanya.

What’s the progress so far? At week 1, he was still snorting. Banyak phlegm and blood lagi. Week 2 is much better. I believe slowly and surely he is recovering. Dengan izin Tuhan of course. I’m glad I insisted on this. So glad.

  1. salam Put3.
nape baca entry ni rs seriau ek..aduiyai.. i mmg ada resedung yg kritikal, jd bila baca enrty yg lepas2 pasal your hubby punya check up and so, rasa macam terpanggil jugak nak try berubat cara ni. kalau tanya silly question boleh x. mahal x kos operate ni? kalau nak jawab or email personal pun boleh jugak, norhaslinda_sallehhuddin@yahoo.com

pernah tgk kat youtube diorang masuk air dalam hidung guna 1 special pot yg spout dia panjang. katanya amalan dahulu kala. cuci rongga hidung. nak try tapi xtau mana nak beli pot tu. Your hubby guna pot jugak ke untuk buat kaedah tu.

ok lah. bos panggil pulak. nnt komen lain. tq tuan blog.

    • Salam Linda,

Yes my hubby pakai method tu utk cuci nasal dia. Kaedah ni sebenarnya boleh gunapakai utk selesema biasa jugak before we resort to medication. Nanti I buat separate entry on this ok? Amik gambar step by step. They call it neti pot. But hubby punya lain sikit mcm botol je ada tube picit air keluar.

The price is rm14k kat prince court. If u r insured, should be no problem. Maybe u can survey from other hospitals too if price is ur concern. Mention to them the 3 types of procedures yg I highlight dlm my entry.

If u nak tanya apa2 lagi u can email me at pu3natul@yahoo.com. I understand u must have a lot of concerns coz I was like that too masa hubby nk operate ni. Research and google for info. Tinggal I x bukak youtube je tgk procedures tu. Seriau!

      • Salam Put3,

semalam dengan jayanya (bantuanYoutube) berjaya mencuci hidung ala-ala guna neti pot tu. mmg best sgt2. i got block nose (both lubang hidung) then around 5 pm, cuci rongga hidung guna kaedah neti pot tu. to my suprise, until 12 am, xde block nose lagi. macam semua mukus dah keluar. mmg lepas ni nak cari yg u cakap tu (botol with spout). rasa mcm lebih berkesan dari makan ubat.

tu je nk update kt tuan blog. tq daun keladi.

      • Good job dear. Sorry I tak sempat up the entry on the nasal irrigation process tu. Asik terlupa nak amik gambar pesakit cuci hidung nya.

It’s been a chaotic week for me – anak demam, saya demam, now hubby plak demam! Uwaaa!!

Keluar masuk ER je keje saya minggu ni.

  2. Pu3, I’m also schedule for the sinus surgery too. Already set date with the doctor on 7th February kat Tropicana Medical Centre (dekat ngan rumah, so senang sikit). By the way how was your hubby? Sakit tak after the surgery? Lama tak nak recover? Berdebar gak ni…Mana pernah surgery2 ni…Mine apart from the sinus kene betul kan my tulang hidung yg bengkok…so sort of melawakan hidung laa…hahaha…anyway, appreciate if you could share some info and experience.

    • Hi Jihah,
Hubby is okay now. Dia kata tak sakit. Makan panadol je as pain killer pun sufficient dah. Sehari je kat hospital. All done internally tau, no incision on the skin.

You repair tulang hidung bengkok means Rhinoplasty ke? Sebab hubby pun repair his deviated septum gak called Septoplasty. Tapi takde la nampak mancung pun sebab bukan tulang hidung, but just the tulang rawan inside yang kena straighten kasi better airways. Kalau lawa kan idung tu macam plastic surgery lain pulak recovery period dia kot? I’m not sure dear.

Tips lepas operation (if yours are similar to my hub’s):
      1. Jangan angkat berat for the first week.
      2. Lots of saline irrigation sebab nak kasi inside wound moist. Kalau kering nanti dia akan berkerak dan sakit.
      3. Rest rest rest. Doctor kasi MC 2 weeks.
      4. Expect fever for the first 4 days (but my hubby tak demam, depends on orang kot)
      5. JANGAN blow nose. Tapi akan ada cecair keluar from the nose lapik je dgn kapas (mcm gambar my hubby tu).
      6. Breathe ikut mulut sebab nanti akan rasa mcm hidung sumbat for the first few days
      7. Nanti akan rasa mcm ada cecair kat tekak. That’s blood. It’s black reddish and mucus pekat bila ludah.

Masa post op follow up yang every week tu, doc akan spray bius dalam hidung before dia bersihkan kerak2 darah inside. Kalau doctor tak spray bius, better makan pain killer dalam 45 mins before jumpa doc. Sebab sakit sikit masa dia clean wound tu, hubby siap keluar air mata without him realizing it (sebab dia tak rasa apa2).

Good luck dear! Doa byk2 semua akan ok.

      • Hi. Done the surgery 7th Feb hari tu. Yesterday was my 1st follow up with the doctor. Removed the tube inside my nose (the tube is to make sure that my nose remain straight after the surgery). It was very painfull. Rasa mcm nak lari from clinic aje. Air mata dah meleleh. Today getting better. Kurang sakit dah. This week still on mc until my next follow up. Next nnt kalau org tanya should they have the same surgery or not, I would say ” PLEASE DONT!!! But that’s probably if they ask me now…in another 2 or 3 months after, probably i would encourage them…who knows kan? Anyway Natul thanks for the info…it really helps a lot.

      • Ouch!! Oh your method is slightly different from hubby’s. Dr Yeo takde letak splint tu. So there were no removal process. Just cleaning luka kat dalam. Dia sedut excess fluid and tarik kerak2 luka kering.

Memang I ada baca that the removal process is painful. Ur doc x spray bius dalam hidung dulu ke b4 tu?

Anyway, glad that u r getting better. Long term dah sinus-free InsyaAllah. Take care!
